Things to do in and around Builth Wells

Situated in Powys, Wales, Wigwam Holidays Builth Wells offers a fabulous base for discovering the best that Mid Wales has to offer. Here are some of our top tips to get you started on your glamping holiday in Builth Wells.

Visit the market town of Builth Wells

This friendly little town was well-known in the 19th century for its therapeutic springs, from which it gets its name. At the centre of the rural communities surrounding it, Builth Wells has always enjoyed the hustle and bustle of markets selling local produce and much of that traditional colour is still there, making the town well worth a visit. Builth Wells is full of cosy pubs and boasts a large collection of applied arts at the Erwood Station Gallery

There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy near Builth Wells too: you can go fishing at Pant-y-Llyn lake or do some sightseeing with a guided tour with Welsh Overland Safari.

If you’re visiting in July, make sure you don’t miss a visit to the Royal Welsh Show, where you’ll see farm animals, local food stalls, sporting events and wide-ranging entertainment for the whole family.

Hay-on-Wye

The border town of Hay-on-Wye is just 8 miles from our Wigwam site, making the farm a fantastic base for enjoying the annual Hay Fesitval’s celebration of literature and the arts — one of the world’s most celebrated literary festivals. Over the last 50 years the town’s increasing number of bookshops has led to the nickname ‘the town of books’, and book lovers won’t want to miss the festival atmosphere when the party comes to this sleepy town. You can switch off and lose yourself in the 11 days of enthralling events with a cosy cabin to return to and read your next favourite book. As the National Book Town of Wales, it’s home to over twenty book shops year-round, so a good read is never far away!

Once you drag your nose out of your latest read, you’ll want to visit the famous Hay Market Day, which takes place every Thursday and has existed for over 700 years! Over 40 stalls offer a range of local produce, showcasing the best that the area has to offer. In fact, Hay is full of quirky, unique shops that you’ll want to spend hours rummaging through, from vinyl to homeware and vintage clothing. Of course, all that exploring takes a toll, but luckily there’s no shortage of places to sit down to a good meal or simply sample some local ales.

Hay Tours is a fantastic way to find out more about the history of the town and surrounding area, and the town’s website has an up to date listing of events on offer.

Explore the majestic Brecon Beacons

The Brecon Beacons National Park is a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts. Along its 100 miles of walking routes, you might see the Welsh mountain ponies that still live wild across the windswept uplands, or spot a red kite carving the air above you. Whether you want a relaxing stroll or an all-day epic, the views of rolling green hills, waterfalls and charming little towns make for a memorable day out.

The Beacons’ breath-taking scenery was carved out during the last Ice Age, and Fforest Fawr Geopark is a Unesco-protected area with waterfalls and rocky caves aplenty. Dozens of prehistoric monuments dot the landscape, and the grassy moorlands can be explored on foot (or on horseback for the more adventurous!) With its dark skies, the national park is also great for some stargazing once the day’s activities are done.

Discover the quirky, yet traditional town of Machynlleth

Just over an hours’ drive from Builth Wells, the market town of Machynlleth is full of a creative spirit that has reinvigorated this historic settlement, making it a fascinating day trip on your glamping holiday. The town’s high street, Heol Maengwyn, offers intriguing shops, cosy cafes and outstanding galleries. The street has been lined with market stalls selling local goods every Wednesday since 1291!

Three miles outside of Machynlleth is The Centre For Alternative Technology, which offers day courses in upcycling, traditional crafts and harnessing renewable energy. Culture buffs will the contemporary Welsh art at MOMA Machynlleth, while the Machynlleth Comedy Festival serves belly laughs every year in May.

The site itself is surrounded by a fence with gates to access the rest of the farm. There is a track behind the Wigwam Cabins which does allow vehicles to access the cabins directly, but there is a maximum speed of 5 mph.
